The Drake-Hysom Line of America

This line represents the fourth-wave of emigration to America by the family that I have so far identified. George Howard Haysham, the progenitor, was born in Portsea, in Hampshire, England. This is a small town on the eastern side of Portsmouth harbor, now part of the Portsmouth city metropolitan area. Portsea is also the name of the low-lying island on which most of the city of Portsmouth is built. A small channel, Port creek, separates the island from the mainland.

George's father had originally come from Swanage, in Dorset, which is further to the west. In Swanage resided one of the largest groupings of Heyshams in England outside Lancashire. They were stonemasons working in the large quarries above Swanage. The Royal Navy, which dominated the Portsmouth area, may have provided good employment opportunities in construction, luring the Swanage masons east, as it expanded to meet the threat from Revolutionary, and later Napoleanic, France.

In America the Haysham surname evolved into Hysham, Haysom and Hysom. Interestingly, the same variations are seen in the surname in Dorset.

(23) George Howard Hysham (1806)
(21) Robert Haysham (c1740) (22) Henry Pike Haysham (1774)

The son of Henry Pike Haysham and Hannah Howard. He was born on 8 June 1806 in Portsea, Hampshire and christened at St. Mary's church. He was trained as a stone mason, like his father, but probably had little education.

George emigrated to America, probably around 1830 when he would have been in his mid-twenties, and settled in Kentucky. After such a long journey why would someone stop there? I don't mean to disparage Kentucky, but was there some draw there for a stone mason? One of the few buildings in any small town that would be made of stone would be the county court house and the jail. Since the census shows that George moved regularly, perhaps he was pursuing work.

George married Nancy Catherine Drake on 26 February 1835 in Carrollton, Muhlenberg county, Kentucky. This is in western Kentucky. She was born in February 1816 in Carrollton, Muhlenberg county, the daughter of Samuel W. Drake and Jane Waters. I suspect this refers to South Carrollton, which is in Muhlenberg county. Carrollton is in Carroll county, well to the northeast, on the Ohio river. I suspect at the time of their marriage the town was known as Carrollton, but was changed in modern times to avoid confusion with the other town. South Carrollton is located on a high plateau on the left bank of the Green River. It was once a major port and laid on the old steamboat route between Bowling Green and Evansville. It was surronded by fertile farming country.

See pantoman@msn.com for William Hysom of Aurora, Colorado. Note that there is a Drakesboro township on the east side of the county, but apparently it was named for a William Drake, the son of Albrittian Drake (1760-1835) of North Carolina, who moved into the county in the early 1800's.

The Drake Family

The family was apparently Dutch in origin. While there have been some attempts to find a link to an earlier family of New York City and its environs, I'm only confident of the information below. Surname variations may have included Draek, Dratz, and DeRaet.

(20) William Drake (1720)

Of Fishkill, Dutchess county, New York. He married Elizabeth Taylor [Teylor]. He was listed in the Tax records of Fishkill as William Drake or Drack for the years 1738, 1740-1748, 1753, and 1754. He died circa 1770.

(21) Cornelius Drake (1741)
(20) William Drake (1720)

He was born on 9 [13] August 1741 in Fishkill, Dutchess county, New York and baptized in the Dutch Reformed church. He married Sarah Worthington, of Connecticutt, in 1763 in Fishkill. By 1793 he was living in Nelson county, Kentucky. In the 1810 census of Hopkinsville, Christian county, Kentucky as Cornelias Drake. In the house were one man, 26 to 44 years old [who could be Samuel, below], and another 45 or older [Cornelius]. Of the women, there was a girl under 10, perhaps a grand-daughter, and a woman 45 and over [Sarah?]. Sarah died after 1804. Cornelius died after 1810.

(22) Samuel Worthington Drake (1777)
(20) William Drake (1720) (21) Cornelius Drake (1741)

He was born on 20 November 1777 in New York. He married Jane Waters, of North Carolina on 16 February 1801 - from "Kentucky Marriages, 1802-1850." She was born in about 1782. He bought land in Christian/Muhlenberg county, Kentucky as early as 10 September 1805 and was listed in the census for Muhlenberg county from 1820. In the 1850 census of Muhlenbuerg county as Samuel Drake, a 73 year old farmer, of New York. His wife was absent, I suppose meaning she had died. In the 1860 of Muhlenberg county as Samuel Drake, 88, living with his daughter, Margaret, and her husband, W.C. Ross. Samuel died in July 1863 in Muhlenberg county, Kentucky.

(23) Nancy Catherine Drake (1816)
(20) William Drake (1720) (21) Cornelius Drake (1741) (22) Samuel W. Drake (1777)

She married George Howard Hysham in February 1835.

In the 1840 census of of Hopkins county, Kentucky as George H. Hison. Hopkins county is just west of Muhlenberg county. Living in the household was a boy, under five years old [James Henry], a man 20 to 30 years old, 2 girls under five [Louisa Jane and Mary Ann], and a woman, 20 to 30 years old.

In the 1850 census of Christian county, Kentucky as Geo H. Hysom, a 44 year old stone mason, of England. Christian county is due south of Hopkins county. Living with him were his wife, Nancy, 33, and children, Louisa J., 13, Jas H., 12, Mary A., 10, Margaret E., 9, Sarah E., 7, Paulina O., 6, Samuel D., 4, and John E., 1, all of Kentucky. As a stone mason he certainly fits in with his Swanage, Dorset forebears.

George moved to Missouri before 1856 and there died on 8 July 1857 in Bloomfield, Stoddard county, Missouri at 51 years of age. Stoddard county is in southeastern Missouri, just west, across the Mississippi river, from Kentucky.

In the 1860 census Liberty township, Stoddard county, Missouri as Nancy Hysum [Hysuns in Ancestry.com], a 45 year old farmer, of Kentucky. Living with her were her children, Louisa J., 23, Sarah E., 18, Polina O., 16, Samuel, 12, John E., 10, George H., 8, and Cornelius, 5, all of Kentucky, and Virginia, 4, and Emma, 3, of Missouri.

Nancy and the family then moved east, back across the Mississippi river into Illinois. It is not certain when this move occurred, but it was probably no later than 1863 and may have been in response to the warfare that was endemic to Missouri at the time. That is, they were moving into a more deeply pro-Union section of the country. Stoddard county was in a region, between the river and the Ozark plateau that was more part of northern Arkansas than it was of Missouri. The Hysom family, with James a member of the pro-Union state militia, would be an obvious target for pro-Confederacy forces seeking to settle scores..

Nancy's eldest son, James, was married in Hamilton county, Illinois in January 1864. Her second son, Samuel, was married in Illinois in 1867.

In the 1870 census of Murphysboro, Jackson county, Illinois as Nancy Hysom [Hyson in Ancestry.com], a 52 year old widow. Jackson county is in southern Illinois, on the Mississippi river. Living with her were her children, Cornelius, 14, who was working on a farm, and Virginia, 12. James Henry Hysom also lived in Murphysboro.

In 1880 Nancy's family had split up. James Henry was living in Williamson county, Illinois (just east of Jackson county), Samuel was in Kansas, and Cornelius was back in Stoddard county, Missouri. George Jr. had died by this time. I haven't yet found Nancy in the 1880 census of either Illinois, Missouri, or Kansas. Nancy would have been about 63 years old. Nancy died in about 1883. George and Nancy had 19 children. I know of the following 14 survivors,
(24) Elizabeth Jane Hysom (1835)
(24) Louisa Jane Hysom (1836)
(24) James Henry Hysom (1838)
(24) Mary Ann Hysom (1839)
(24) Margaret Elizabeth Hysom (1840)
(24) Sarah Eliza Hysom (1842-twin)
(24) Paulina [Polina] Catherine Hysom (1842-twin)
(24) Thaddeus [Thadius] Wilson Hysom (1843)
(24) Samuel Drake Hysom (1847)
(24) John Edward Hysom (1849)
(24) George Howard Hysom Jr. (1852)
(24) Cornelius Benjamin Hysom (1855)
(24) Virginia Francis Hysom (1857)
(24) Eugenia Emma Hysom (1858)

(24) Elizabeth Jane Hysom (1835)
(21) Robert Haysham (c1740) (22) Henry Pike Haysham (1774) (23) George Howard Hysham (1806)

She was born on 7 December 1835 in Hopkins county, Kentucky. She died at birth.

(24) Louisa Jane Hysom (1836)
(21) Robert Haysham (c1740) (22) Henry Pike Haysham (1774) (23) George Howard Hysham (1806)

She was born on 26 December 1836 in Hopkins county, Kentucky. In the 1850 census of Christian county, Kentucky as Louisa J. Hysom, 13. In the 1860 census Liberty township, Stoddard county, Missouri as Louisa J. Hysum [Hysuns in Ancestry.com], 23, still living at home with her widowed mother.

She married William Pully, of Hamilton county, Illinois on 15 November 1860. She died on 4 November 1906 in Hillsdale, Miami county, Kentucky.

(24) James Henry Hysom (1838)
(21) Robert Haysham (c1740) (22) Henry Pike Haysham (1774) (23) George Howard Hysham (1806)

He was born on 27 February 1838 in Hopkins county, Kentucky. Was his middle name in honor of his grandfather? In the 1850 census of Christian county, Kentucky as Jas H. Hysom, 12, living at home with his parents. His father trained him as a stone mason.

In the 1860 census of Byrd township, Cape Girardeau county, Missouri as James Hayson, a 23 year old farmer, of Kentucky. Cape Girardeau is in southeastern Missouri, just northeast of Stoddard county where he widowed mother lived, on the Mississippi river. Living with him was his wife, Julie, 18, of Kentucky. Julie died before 1870.

James H. Hysom served in the 11th Missouri Cavalry, company E, and later in the 49th Illinois Infantry, company B. [B. 49. Ill. Inf; E, 11 [garbled], Mo. SM. [State Militia] Cav.].

The 11th Missouri State Militia (MSM) Cavalry

This was a Union regiment. Confusingly there was also a Federal army unit and a Confederate unit of similar name as well as an 11th Missouri Cavalry battalion, which was also a Confederate unit.

The 11th MSM Cavalry was organized in April 1862 and initially assigned duty in the District of northern Missouri. The Second and Eleventh Cavalry Regiments, Missouri State Militia, were consolidated on 2 September 1862, and were known thereafter as the Second Missouri Cavalry Regiment, Missouri State Militia. They remained in the western theater, fighting mainly in southeastern Missouri and northern Arkansas. They were mustered out on 20 April 1865.

James married Helen Mary Lamenda Randal on 15 January 1864 in Hamilton county, Illinois. She was born on 23 April 1842 in Sparta, White county, Tennessee. James must have mustered out of his cavalry unit early, perhaps due to injuries received.

In a webpage dedicated to the 49th infantry regiment a Private James Hisen, of Hurricane [Fayette county, Illinois], was listed in company B. This man did not muster in until 17 April 1865 and was mustered out on 9 September. Hurricane is in south-central Illinois, just north of Vandalia. Apparently James was discharged from the Missouri cavalry then moved to Illinois where he joined the local infantry unit. Around this same time his widowed mother and the rest of the family also probably moved to Illinois.

The 49th Illinois Infantry

They served in the western theater from 31 December 1861 to 9 September 1865. Company E was mainly drawn from Macoupin and St. Clair counties. They fought at the battles of Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, in the siege of Corinth and operations against Vicksburg, in the central Mississippi, Meridian and Red River campaigns, Pleasant Hill and Nashville. However, all of their significant campaigning was over by April 1865.

In the 1870 census of Murphysboro, Jackson county, Illinois as James Hysen, a 32 year old stone mason, of Kentucky. Living with him were his wife, Helen, 26, of Tennessee, and children, John 6, and Nancy, 3, of Illinois. His mother and little brother, Cornelius, were also living there.

In the 1880 census of Southern township, Williamson county, Illinois as James H. [F. in Ancestry.com] Hysom, a 42 year old farmer, of Kentucky. I guess he couldn't make a living as a stone mason. His father was from England and his mother was from Kentucky. Living with him were his wife, Helen M. [sic], 38, of Tennessee [her father was from Indiana] and children, John W., 15, Nancy E., 12, James H., 9, Charles E., 5, and unnamed [a son], 3/12, who was born in March 1880, all of Illinois. Williamson county is in southern Illinois, just east of Jackson county.

James died on 2 April 1893 in Hamilton county, Illinois. In 17 August 1894 Helen L. Hysom, of Kansas, was listed in the pension records as his widow. James younger brother, Samuel, had moved to Kansas by 1880. If James's place of death is corrent, I'll have to assume that Helen moved to Kansas for the support her brother-in-law might be able to give her.

In the 1900 census of Valley, Rice county, Kansas as Helen L. Hysom, a 58 year old widow [April 1842], of Tennessee. Rice county is in central Kansas. She was living with her son, James H. Hysom, and daughter, Maudie. After this she moved to Washington state, following her son James.

In the 1910 census of Mount Vernon, Skagit, Washington as Helen L. Hysom, a 67 year old widow, of Tennessee. She was a roomer with William Murlin.

In the 1920 census of Bellingham, Whatcom county, Washington as Helen L. Heysom [Keyton in Ancestry.com], a 77 year old widow, of Tennessee. She was living with John O. and Lillie E. Wilson, 49.

In the 1930 census of Bellingham, Whatcom county, Washington as Helen L. [F in Ancestry.com] Hysom, an 87 year old widow, of Tennessee. She was living with Lillian Wilson, 59, her neice.

I have not been able to make a positive connection to our James and the man and his family, below. However, another researcher feels confident this is so and I'll report it as such until I get better information. The questions are, Why did they marry in Denver, where were they in 1910, why did Ethel change the name to Hayson?

James Howard Hayson [or Hayon] married Ethel Blanche Crawford on 15 November 1906 in Denver, Colorado. She was born on 2 May 1891 in Findlay, Hancock county, Ohio. They must have remained in Colorado at least through 1913.

The 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry

Kansas was represented in the Spanish-American War of 1898-1899 by 4 regiments, including the 20th Kansas Infantry Regiment. The 20th was organized from 27 April to 5 May 1898 with 46 officers and 964 enlisted. They arrived in San Franciso on 20 May and were assigned to the 2nd Independent Brigade, 8th Army Corps. Company D sailed on the transport ship INDIANA on 27 October and arrived in Manila on 30 November. There the regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 8th Army Corps.

They participated in engagements around Manila 4-6 February; uprising in Manila, 23 February; engagement at Caloocan, 10 February, and defense of Caloocan, 11 February to 24 March; engagements at Tuliajan River, 25 March; Polo, 26 March; Marilao, 27 March; Bocaue and Guiguinto, 29 March; advance on Malolos, 30-31 March1; engagement at Bagbag River, 25 April; Rio Grande, 26-27 April; Santo Tomas, 4 May; Bacolor, 24 May; defense of San Fernando, 6 May to 25 June, and engagements near San Fernando, 25 May and 16 June; reconnaissance's to Santa Rita, 25 May; to Bulacan, 1 April, and Paranaque, 2 August.

They mustered out of service at San Francisco on 28 October 1899. Casualties while in service were: Officers -- killed in action, 3; wounded, 20. Enlisted men -- killed in action, 19; wounded, 120; died of wounds, 11; died of disease, 35; deserted, 4.

I have an Iram J. Hysom, of Company D, 20th Kansas Infantry, who received a Civil War [sic] pension as an invalid, as of 30 September 1901. Aircraft Manufacturing in Wichita, Kansas

In the 1920's Wichita touted itself as the air capital of the world. The big manufacturers in 1930 included Stearman, Cessna, Swallow, and Travel Air, which would later become Beechcraft. By 1930 however the Depression was in full swing and Travel Air, the undisputed king of Wichita manufacturers, began lay-offs. By early 1931 a city that at one time boasted as many as 29 aircraft manufacturers had barely a handful still operating.
